Quentin Tarantino to receive Director of the Year Award

QUENTIN TARANTINO TO RECEIVE DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD AT 31st ANNUAL PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FILM AWARDS GALA

 Palm Springs, CA (December 27, 2019) - The 31st annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will present Quentin Tarantino with the Director of the Year Award for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood at its annual Film Awards Gala. The event, presented by American Express, sponsored by AT&T and Entertainment Tonight and hosted by Mary Hart, is scheduled for Thursday, January 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The festival runs January 2-13, 2020.  

"Quentin Tarantino captures the essence of 1969 Hollywood in his latest cinematic masterpiece Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, bringing to the screen career best performances from his two lead actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt," said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. "We are delighted to honor Quentin Tarantino once again for the excellent quality of his work, this time with the Director of the Year Award!"

Past recipients of the Director of the Year Award include Bradley Cooper, Stephen Daldry, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, Sean Penn, Jason Reitman, David O. Russell and Robert Zemeckis. In the years they were honored Mc Queen (12 Years a Slave), Payne (Sideways), Reitman (Up in the Air), Russell (The Fighter) received Best Director Academy Award nominations. Iñárritu received the honor twice for Babel and Birdman. Tarantino was previously honored by the festival with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award. 

Tarantino joins this year's previously announced honorees Antonio Banderas (International Star Award, Actor), Laura Dern (Career Achievement Award), Adam Driver (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor), Cynthia Erivo (Breakthrough Performance Award), Jamie Foxx (Spotlight Award, Actor), Zack Gottsagen (Rising Star Award), Jennifer Lopez (Spotlight Award, Actress), Joaquin Phoenix (Chairman's Award), Martin Scorsese (Sonny Bono Visionary Award), Charlize Theron (International Star Award, Actress) and Renée Zellweger (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress). 

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood visits 1969 Los Angeles during the final moments of Hollywood's golden age where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) face the challenges of an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Emile Hirsch, Margaret Qualley, Timothy Olyphant, Julia Butters, Austin Butler, Dakota Fanning, Bruce Dern, Mike Moh, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis and Al Pacino. Tarantino has received several nominations for the film including Best Screenplay and Best Director for the Golden Globes; Best Original Screenplay and Best Director for the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards; Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for the Satellite Awards; Best Screenplay and Best Director for AARP Movies for Grownup Awards; and Best Screenplay and Best Direction from AACTA International Awards. 

Writer, director and producer Quentin Tarantino has established himself as one of the most celebrated filmmakers of his generation. Tarantino's The Hateful Eight received many awards, including Ennio Morricone's only Oscar® along with Golden Globes, BAFTA and ASCAP wins for the composer; while Tarantino was nominated by BAFTA and the Golden Globes for his screenplay, Jennifer Jason Leigh by the Academy and BAFTA for supporting actress and Robert Richardson by the Academy for his Ultra Panavision 70MM cinematography. Tarantino wrote, directed and starred in Reservoir Dogs, which made an auspicious debut at the Sundance Film Festival and marked Tarantino's first trip to Cannes (out of competition) and the beginning of his career as a filmmaker. His other film credits include Death Proof, Four Rooms, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Jackie Brown.
