film synopsis
He’d been denied dignity, liberty and even so much as a passport to see the world beyond the USSR. Working as a radioman aboard Soviet fishing vessels for two decades, Simas Kudirka took his sole shot at freedom on November 23, 1970 while stationed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. As Kudirka’s ship saddled up beside U.S. Coast Guard cutter Vigilant, the Lithuanian seaman waited for precisely the right moment before making a daring jump off the Soviet ship and onto the deck of the Vigilant. But as Coast Guard brass quickly handed the sailor back to the Russians and he received a 10-year prison sentence, Kudirka’s cause became a potent symbol of the fight for freedom, resulting in nationwide protests and leading to a reckoning between leaders of the world’s most powerful nations. Director Giedre Zickyte’s thrilling documentary is a moving testament to the resilience of one man and the power of community.
