film synopsis
As a cynical newsman famously said in John Ford’s 1962 film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” In today’s world of “fake news,” it is increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction when influential pundits and the media get involved and muddy the waters to sway public opinion. Based on real events surrounding the notorious Deventer murder case in the Netherlands, and inspired by Dutch TV investigative reporter Bas Haan’s non-fiction book, The Judgement follows Haan (Fedja van Huêt) as he fights for justice when an innocent person suffers a trial-by-media that practically destroys his and his partner’s life. In the tradition of PSIFF audience favorites Accused (PSIFF 2015) and The Verdict (PSIFF 2014), this compelling drama follows the intrepid Haan as he challenges the judicial system, the media and prevailing opinion in an attempt to uncover the truth.
