film synopsis
When single parent Amina learns of her teenage daughter Maria’s pregnancy, her life falls into disarray. And when Maria reveals that she does not intend to keep the baby, Amina is even more stunned: having an abortion not only goes against Amina’s religious beliefs, but is illegal in Chad. Desperate, both mother and daughter know they will have to lean on one another and on the support system women have built in order to protect each other from a patriarchal society. Director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun – regarded as one of the first Chadian film directors – explores the strength of the mother-daughter bond while soberingly depicting Chadian society and its morals. Haroun adeptly balances thriller undertones with emotional authenticity in a film elevated by its two strikingly compelling lead performances.
