film synopsis
High up in the mountains of rural Iceland, Maria (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason) are a childless couple accustomed to a serene, prosaic routine living with their pets on the farm where they breed sheep. But after discovering an unnatural newborn in their sheep barn, everything as they know it changes. Initially alarmed and perplexed, the couple decides to embrace this impossible being and raise her as their own. Naming her Ada, the three form an unconventional but warm and loving family unit. But something is lurking in the surrounding mist, and nature may not be so forgiving or accepting of their choice. Drawing inspiration from the macabre fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, the haunting debut feature from director Valdimar Jóhannsson is a darkly enchanting magical realist fable that is now Iceland’s admirably bold entry for the International Oscar®.
