film synopsis
It’s time to celebrate country music’s long overdue coming-out party! In an industry as male-dominated and conservative-leaning as the country music scene, it might be surprising to learn that some of the genre’s biggest hits were written and produced by LGBTQ+ women. In this inspiring and illuminating documentary, filmmaker and activist T.J. Parsell offers a platform for a group of lesbian and trans musicians to step out from behind the curtain and share their voices. Writing songs for superstars like Johnny Cash, Reba McEntire and Tim McGraw, the queer artists at the heart of Invisible found ways to continue working within an industry that denied them a stage to perform as their authentic selves. With appearances by music icons Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Chely Wright (one of the first country stars to publicly come out as gay), Invisible weaves deeply personal tales of passion and perseverance in the face of sexism and homophobia alongside a number of toe-tapping musical performances.
