film synopsis
Like many of the women whose husbands went missing after the Kosovo War, Fahrije (Yllka Gashi in a towering performance) is left processing her grief while attempting to raise two children in her patriarchal village. Between butting heads with her father-in-law’s outdated views and quelling the outbursts of her preteen daughter and young son who miss their father, Fahrije works tirelessly with the other widows to launch her small business selling homemade hot pepper preserves. But her restless determination and quiet perseverance to reclaim independence from multigenerational burdens is met with pushback from the oppressive misogyny rampant in the village, where even a woman becoming an entrepreneur is considered a radical act. Based on a true story, writer-director Blerta Basholli’s directorial debut is a stunning, haunting portrait of women’s empowerment that made history at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival where it won all three top awards.
