film synopsis
In January 2019 the dead body of Timothy Dean was found in the West Hollywood apartment of Democratic political donor Ed Buck, setting off a media firestorm. He was the second gay Black man to die at Buck’s hands, following the 2017 death of 26-year-old Gemmel “Juelz” Moore. Both deaths were ruled accidental overdoses. No charges were pressed against Buck until a third “John Doe” victim appeared. The media’s lurid accounts dismissively labeled his victims as “sex workers.” Michiel Thomas’s impassioned and well-researched documentary sets out to reclaim Gemmel and Tim’s complex humanity and their struggles to survive in a world riddled with racism, homophobia, drugs and a political machine that protected powerful white men. With testimony from their bereaved friends and family, and the activists who tirelessly fought to bring Buck to justice, Gemmel & Tim is both a hard-hitting exposé and a moving memorial.
