film synopsis
It’s 1948 Palestine, and fearless and fiercely intelligent 14-year-old Farha (Ashraf Barhom in an extraordinary debut) has lofty dreams of leaving her village to study in the city alongside her best friend Farida. Despite his initial objections, her father relents, despite tradition and expectations from the townspeople stipulating that she be married off like other girls her age. But in an instant her entire future is upended when war and tragedy envelop her village. Instructed to hide in a locked pantry, Farha watches through the cracks in the wooden door as her home is ravaged, and as opportunities for escape slip further and further away. Based on true events, this powerful and harrowing vision from filmmaker Darin J. Sallam heralds the debut of a masterful new directorial voice. Anchored by Barhom’s astounding lead performance, Farha is an intense and haunting story of survival and lost innocence.
