film synopsis
Granting audiences an all-access backstage pass to the Coachella Valley’s most recent Desert X exhibition, this awe-inspiring documentary peels back the curtain on the many breathtaking works commissioned and curated by artistic director Neville Wakefield and co-curator César García-Alvarez. The 12 visionary artists from eight countries invited to participate in the 2021 exhibition were encouraged to mine the desert for inspiration, resulting in a barrage of dazzling and surreal large-scale works that challenge and confront issues as affecting and endemic as the Native American Land Back movement, climate change, the drought, feminist histories and racism. A celebration of art as well as an exploration of local history, this rich and fast-paced documentary invites viewers to meet the innovative and impassioned artists, marvel at the wondrous art, and never look at the surrounding desert quite the same way again.
