film synopsis
A coming-out story rooted in an ancient society and a striking cultural practice, the Tbilisi-set And Then We Danced is both a love letter to traditional Georgian dance and a story about someone who wants to break the norm. Merab is a gifted young performer struggling with the expectations of his dance master and family while increasingly giddy with desire for Irakli, a dashing new talent from Batumi who may imperil his chance of joining the national company. The rivalry between the dancers turns into a close friendship, and then something more. But with same-sex desire unacceptable within the oppressively conservative confines of Georgian society, can Merab be true to himself and remain in his homeland? Acclaimed filmmaker Levan Akin’s first Georgian-language feature is an exquisite, sensitive and emotionally robust experience boasting unforgettable dance sequences set to the music of ABBA and Robyn.
