2019 Film Festival
In conversation with Writer/Director/Actor Emilio Estevez
film synopsis
Set in Cincinnati on a record-breaking cold day, writer/director Emilio Estevez returns to the library more than 30 years after his famous detention in The Breakfast Club. Stuart (Estevez) and Myra (Jena Malone) are librarians whose responsibilities seem more like those of social workers, dealing on a daily basis with diverse and marginalized patrons. At closing time, the public library staff is faced with a moral dilemma when, led by Jackson (Michael Kenneth Williams), the homeless patrons stage an action against overcrowded shelters by locking themselves in for the night. As the night progresses, Stuart finds himself at the epicenter of a fight for dignity involving local government, the police, and the media with as his sole allies being Myra, his neighbor, and his direct supervisor. Estevez uses the symbol of the public library to tackle the issues of sensationalized news and politics. Tempered with witty dialogue, the all-star cast delivers nuanced performances of layered characters with different interests in this dramedy about humanity.
