The idea that each of us has a perfect double somewhere in the world, with the same talents, but making different choices, is a fascinating one. It is from this fantasy that The Double Life of Veronique springs. Sharing not only a name, but also a gift for music and a potentially fatal heart condition, the two women pursue their individual lives, somehow aware that they are special. Though one will die an untimely death, her effect on the other will not cease. (PSIFF 1992) Free community screening sponsored by Desert Care Network.

film synopsis

"The idea that each of us has a perfect double somewhere in the world, equipped with the same talents, but making different choices, is a fascinating one. It is from this fantasy that The Double Life of Veronique springs. Irene Jacob, winner of the Best Actress Award at last summer's Cannes Film Festival, turns in a pair of bravura performances as two woman - one Polish, one French - who seem to be physically linked despite the fact that only a vague and unconscious awareness of the other's presence exists. Sharing not only a name, but also a gift for music and a potentially fatal heart condition, the two women pursue their individual lives, somehow aware that they are special. Though one will die an untimely death, her effect on the other will not cease. Polish director, Krysztof Kieslowski (The Decalogue) delicately weaves the threads of the two stories into a hypnotic whole cloth. The final result is a sensual and visually stunning fairy-tale centered on two women's simple and moving experiences. Ultimately, the film is a love story between two strangers, one who continues living in the soul of the other, even after she dies." -PSIFF 1992
