Ellie Wen was born in Hong Kong and moved to Los Angeles when she was eight years old. She attended Stanford University and graduated with a BA in Drama and a Minor in Sociology. Upon graduation from Stanford, she moved back to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry. Ellie was selected for the Project Involve fellowship program and was named the Barbara Boyle Scholar. She has directed and produced numerous shorts, documentaries, and features, including White Frog, which she co-wrote. In addition to creating independently, she has also worked at CAA and CBS Films in all aspects of film finance, sales, acquisitions, production, and development. Most recently, she was the Director of Development in Original Series at Super Deluxe, an independent entertainment studio funded by Turner. Her documentary "Single Mother Only Daughter" has screened at numerous film festivals. It premiered online on Short of the Week and is a Vimeo Staff Pick. She released a short documentary series on Participant Media's digital platform SoulPancake called "Doing Good Business" about social entrepreneurs around the world. Ellie received her MFA in Documentary Film and Video at Stanford University. During her time there, she produced four short documentary films. "Share," which she co-directed, has screened at DOC NYC, Frameline, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, and more. It had its international premiere at DOK Leipzig, where it was nominated for the Young Eyes Film Award, and it won the InspirASIAN student film award at CAAMFest in San Francisco. It was recently acquired by and released on The Guardian. For her film "On Mother’s Day," Ellie was awarded the Best Local Filmmaker Award at the UN Women Global Voices Film Festival and Best Documentary Short at the Oakland Short Film Festival. During her final year in the MFA program, Ellie received the UFVA Carole Fielding Student Grant for her thesis film, "The Missfits."
