director biography

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Jessie Lee is a Taiwanese-American writer/director and editor based in Los Angeles. Jessie spent the majority of her childhood in Taipei, Taiwan, and her work revolves around themes of displacement. Prior to directing, she was an assistant editor at a trailer house, as well as an assistant cameraperson. She has also assistant directed on over 15 short films that have taken place all over the world, including in the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Taiwan, and Jordan. Jessie received her BA in Film Studies and Literary Journalism from UC Irvine, and her MFA in Film Directing from UCLA. Her film, Daiquiri, screened at the DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival. Jessie's most recent film, "Tea Shop 《馨,䎏》" received the Edie and Lew Wasserman Fellowship. Shot in Taiwan, the film explores the relationship between two sisters who must confront their past decisions in order to move forward with the family's tea store. Tea Shop was awarded a UCLA MFA Director’s Spotlight Award in 2019. Jessie tells stories of characters that have been uprooted or struggle to find a sense of cultural belonging in their environment.
