director biography
Maria del Mar Rosario is a filmmaker from Puerto Rico. In her work, which traverses documentary and fiction film, she explores themes at the intersection of gender and immigration. A graduate from Columbia University, where she double-majored in Creative Writing and Film Studies, Maria del Mar ultimately completed her graduate degree at the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de Los Baños, Cuba. Her thesis short, La Bonita – awarded at aluCine, Latin Film +Media Ars Festival – looks closely at painful procedures to unmask the violence of normative feminine standards of beauty. Maria del Mar has been awarded the IFP-Marcie Bloom Fellowship in Film 2018-2019. She is an IDFAcademy-2018 alumni and is currently a Creative Capital mentee. Her films have premiered in festivals such as IDFA, Hot Docs and Muestra Joven ICAIC, among others. She holds an MFA in Media Arts from the City University of New York, lives in Harlem, and hopes to expand her work to her native Puerto Rico.
