Gabriela Garcia Medina is originally from Havana, Cuba, but was brought up in London, Geneva, and Spain. In 2001, she moved to California to pursue a BFA at UCLA's School of Theater, Film & Television with a double minor in Chicano Studies and African American Studies. After graduating (2005), Gabriela's spoken word show became the best selling act on the national college market, showcasing at over 1000 universities across the US and having shared the stage with artists including the Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull and figures such as Barrack Obama, Kamala Harris, Deepak Chopra and Thich Nhat Hahn. From 2012 - 2015, Gabriela pursued two MFA degrees at CalArts, graduating in 2015 with five short films. Gabriela’s feature screenplay LITTLE CON LILI was the recipient of the Hedgebrook Screenwriting fellowship (2016) and in 2017 went into development with Mandalay Pictures (Jason Michael Berman). In 2019, Gabriela’s short film LITTLE CON LILI won Best of Fest at the 2019 HBO Women in Comedy Festival, and won Best Short Contest with NBC (2019), was the recipient of the $20K FOTOKEM Post-Production Award at LALIFF (2019) and has been selected to screen at several OSCAR and BAFTA qualifying film festivals worldwide. In Sept 2019, Gabriela co-wrote and directed the short film: THE 90 DAY PLAN, and directed an episode of the YouTube series VINYL REWIND: Abbey Road Studios 50th Anniversary episode.
