Charlotte Mars is an Australian filmmaker originally from the Blue Mountains, the traditional lands of the Darug and Gundungurra peoples. She does not define her practice by form, genre or role, but is drawn to works of cinematic nuance, exploring queer identity and the lives of women. Charlotte studied Media Arts at UTS and began her career in 2013 as an ArtStart mentee to director Cate Shortland (Lore, Berlin Syndrome) for her first short, the award-winning Awake, which screened at film festivals around Australia and the UK. Charlotte was also Scripted Development Manager, and later Executive, of NBCU’s Matchbox Pictures, where she worked under the tutelage of Penny Chapman and Debbie Lee, along with the award-winning writers, directors and producers of TV dramas such as Glitch, Secret City, The Family Law, Deadline Gallipoli and Nowhere Boys. Charlotte was a 2016 WIFTS (Women’s International Film and Television Society) honouree for her documentary work with Maya Newell including their ABC-doc Growing Up Gayby (2013), and the ‘controversial’, multi-award winning, AACTA and AWGIE-nominated feature-doc Gayby Baby (2015). In 2017, she moved into arts, producing the “monumental” (the Guardian, 2018), 35-minute, four-screen video artwork Evanescence, by artist Amos Gebhardt, which premiered at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Charlotte was awarded the SheDoc Fellowship 2019 and is dividing her time between Berlin and Sydney during the development of her first scripted feature, Somnio, with Girl and Body producer Ella Millard, and feature documentary, Muscle, with producer Rita Walsh.
