film synopsis

Singer, innovator, legend. Born Trinidad Lopez III to migrant farmworkers and armed early on with a pawn-shop guitar, young Trini quickly rose from humble origins in Dallas’s violent Little Mexico neighborhood to become a local sensation, interpreting such standards as “Cielito Lindo” and “La Bamba.” Overcoming intense racial prejudice, and with help from friend Buddy Holly, Trini soon became an international sensation with a string of hits including “A-me-ri-ca,” “Lemon Tree” and his groundbreaking interpretation of “If I Had a Hammer,” which marked the beginning of Latin rock. With a treasure trove of rich archival footage – including a legendary Paris residency where he outshone upstart band The Beatles – and featuring interviews with Dionne Warwick, Tony Orlando and Jim Brown, My Name Is Lopez is a colorful and moving testament to a showbiz legend who reached the pinnacle of stardom, but who never lost touch with his humble roots.
