2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
As a final gift to her fans, Agnès Varda has left us this buoyant last testament, a two-hour self portrait in which the spritely 90-year-old godmother of the French New Wave looks back on her life and work. Seated before an audience in a Paris opera house, she charms us with stories about her inspirations, her technique, her politics and her late husband Jacques Demy. We are treated to generous clips that range from her early breakthrough, Cleo from 5 to 7, to fascinating stories about the making of Vagabond with Sandrine Bonnaire, to her sojourns in 1960s L.A., to the great personal documentaries The Gleaners and I and Faces Places and her late work as a visual artist. If you don’t know Varda’s work, this playful, inventive film is a perfect introduction. To those who love and revere her, it's the fondest of farewells.
