2020 Film Festival
film synopsis
The Hungarian artist László Moholy-Nagy may not be as famous as Picasso or Klee, or his Bauhaus school contemporaries Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, but his influence on art and design in modern culture is indelible. A visionary teacher and artist who worked in a myriad of forms — photography, painting, film, graphic arts, collage, sculpture — he fled the Nazis and in 1939 formed The New Bauhaus in Chicago. There he broke down the barriers between art and design, encouraged his students to use the latest technology to wed artistic ends to social progress and confronted the tensions between art and commerce. His pioneering multimedia ideas were decades ahead of his time. As Forbes magazine wrote about director Alysa Nahmais’ deep, inspirational chronicle of his life and work: “By the end of the movie, you won’t just admire Maholy-Nagy, you’ll want to be just like him.”
