film synopsis
From the very beginning it’s obvious that Nicholas (Kai Luke Brummer) is a sensitive young man who wants nothing to do with what South Africa's white minority government stands for. Based on the autobiographical novel by Andre Carl van der Merwe, director Oliver Hermanus takes us back to 1981 Apartheid, when all the young white men over 16 were required to serve in the military to protect their country against the "black danger.” Nicholas, portrayed with touching nuance and layers by Brummer, is in a constant state of anxiety; he refuses to conform to the racist, toxic masculinity of his boot camp, and also has to hide that he is a "moffie" (an Afrikaans gay slur) in order to survive this deeply homophobic environment. Hermanus paints a dark and poignant portrait of a somber era of South Africa's history.
