When a celebrated sculpture briefly went missing from a Rodin retrospective in Santiago, the “theft” turned out to be a provocative statement that sparked a debate on the nature of art itself. This fresh, lively, and unexpectedly touching, documentary revisits the scene of the crime.

film synopsis

When Santiago’s Fine Arts Museum mounted a retrospective of the works of sculptor Auguste Rodin in the summer of 2005, no one could have anticipated that the exhibition would birth a scandal that would rock Chilean society and the international art world. But when one of the master’s most celebrated works, Torso of Adele, went missing, only to be quickly “found” in a nearby park by local art student Luis Emilio Onfray Fabres, what at first appeared to be nothing more than a prank quickly revealed itself to be a provocative statement on the nature of loss and memory. The thoughtful, if troubled, young artist turned a quiet exhibition into a major must-see attraction—and made Santiago the center of a debate on the nature of art itself.

With the participation of the thief himself, this fresh, lively and unexpectedly touching debut feature from co-writer/director Cristóbal Valenzuela Berríos revisits the scene of the crime.

In competition for the Cine Latino Award.
