    Sweden/Denmark/Finland | 100 minutes | World Cinema Now

Authoritatively claiming a place in the sports film canon, Borg vs. McEnroe grippingly explores the characters of the two legendary athletes on opposite sides of the net—and the personality spectrum—for one of the greatest tennis matches of all time.

film synopsis

Cementing its rightful place in the sports film canon, Borg vs. McEnroe grippingly explores the legendary athletes behind one of the greatest tennis matches of all time.

With a steely demeanor and fierce training regime, Swedish four-time Wimbledon champ Björn Borg (breakout star Sverrir Gudnason) is an international sensation and seemingly the polar opposite to his explosive American rival, the expletive-spouting John McEnroe (Shia LeBeouf). But behind the calculated, robot-like persona Borg presents to the camera is a conflicted man with his own history of fiery outbursts on the court. Only his coach and closest confidant Lennart Bergelin (Stellan Skarsgård) can tame Borg’s combustible temper. While Borg may have mastered his public image, McEnroe continually struggles to gain respect and is hindered by his public blow-ups.

Director Janus Metz cleverly uses revealing flashbacks that only heighten the drama when the pros meet on the court for a final, hair-raising showdown.
